Sports massage, deep tissue, therapeutic, recovery — the names overlap and studios use them differently, which makes it hard to know what to book. Here is a simple way to think about it.
Therapeutic / recovery massage
The most broadly useful option. It eases everyday muscular tension, aids relaxation and recovery, and supports better sleep. Pressure is tailored to you — it does not have to be intense to be effective. Ideal if you are carrying desk-day tightness or general stress.
Deep tissue massage
Firmer, slower work focused on stubborn, deeper tension. Good when a specific area — often the shoulders, neck or lower back — stays tight despite stretching. The pressure is firmer, but it should never be a case of 'no pain, no gain'; tell your therapist what feels right.
Sports massage
Geared towards active people and training recovery. It combines firmer techniques with advice on load and stretching to help you keep moving. You do not need to be an athlete to benefit — it suits anyone who trains regularly.
Which should you book?
- General tension, stress, sleep → therapeutic / recovery
- One stubborn tight area → deep tissue
- Training a lot, recovery focus → sports massage
