Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people come to us. Reformer Pilates is often recommended for it — but it helps to be clear about what it can and cannot do, and how to start without making things worse.

Why Pilates is often suggested

Much everyday back discomfort is linked to how we move and how well the muscles that support the spine are working. Pilates focuses on exactly that: controlled movement, core support and mobility. The reformer's spring resistance lets you work at a level that suits you, which makes it easier to build supportive strength gently.

What it can help with

  • Building strength in the muscles that support your spine
  • Improving mobility and easing general stiffness
  • Restoring confidence to move after a flare-up

What it is not

Pilates is not a medical treatment or a cure, and it is not a substitute for seeing your GP or a specialist — especially with new, severe, or unusual pain, or pain with other symptoms. If anything about your back pain is concerning, get it checked first. We assess everyone before starting and will refer on when that is the right thing to do.

How to start safely

Begin with an assessment or a 1:1 intro rather than jumping into a busy class. That lets us understand your history, set the springs appropriately and choose movements that feel supportive rather than provocative. From there we progress at your pace.

Start gently, build consistently, and let comfortable movement — not intensity — be the goal.
